Last days to see the exhibition “PAST FOOD – 15,000 years of nutrition”
The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology’s special exhibition “PAST FOOD – 15,000 years of nutrition” will be open to visitors for a few days, until Sunday, November 3rd, 2024. The exhibition provides compelling information about what our ancestors ate and what foods they knew about in different eras. Afterwards, starting on November 23rd, a new area will be opening for one year called THE LOFT. This is a space where museum visitors can relax and learn how living in South Tyrol has changed through the millennia.
Many foods that we take for granted today, such as wheat, pork, chicken, apples, and lemons, were brought to Central Europe over the course of millennia. Farmers who immigrated to Central Europe from the Fertile Crescent between Türkiye and the Arabian Peninsula gradually brought new varieties of fruits and vegetables as well as grains and legumes with them.
Still, the tables of our ancestors were also richly laden with foods that are less well known today. The special exhibition reveals which foods our ancestors found, collected, and grew in the Alpine region and what they cooked in their pots during meals. The exhibition is interactive: in addition to captivatingly presented information, there is a lot to see and touch, which makes it ideal for families with children.
